Homeostatic Synaptic Plasticity

 
HSP — A feedback mechanism that operates over relatively long timescales to balance the excitability of a given synapse with chronic changes in input activity. For example, prolonged input deprivation usually leads to the homeostatic strengthening of synapses.

The key mechanisms in HSP, and in all types of Long Term Plasticity seem to be α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic-acid (AMPA)-receptors (AMPARs), ionotropic glutamate receptors permeable to sodium, potassium, and, in some cases, calcium. AMPARs are responsible for postsynaptic depolarization and fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
