Hippocampus

The hippocampus is a structure within the limbic system of the brain believed to assist in the acquisition of long term declarative memory.

The role of the hippocampus has been traditionally believed to be limited to the acquisition and storage of declarative knowledge but not non-declarative knowledge). This view, however, is quickly yielding to more nuanced understandings of the function of this structure, and how those functions relate to long-, and short-term memory, and the acquisition of new memory.
