Non-coding DNA

 
Or, Junk DNA — are sequences of DNA that have no (currently) known function. Most of the genome is comprised of these sequences. Non-coding DNA is essentially DNA that does not encode information that is used in producing protein assemblies for use in the cell's molecular machinery.

Lately there have been studies conducted that suggest these sequences do make a contribution to the functionality of the cell. For this reason the term "non-coding DNA" has become preferred over the term "junk DNA."
