Lubbock, John

Sir John Lubbock - Known primarily for his insect-behavior experiments, and specifically for his famous experiment comparing the behaviors of flies, and bees in a jar.

1834 - 1913

Photo of John Lubbock

In Sir Lubbock's experiment, a number of bees were placed in a jar with the same number of flies. The jar was laid on its side uncovered. It was oriented such that the bottom of the jar faced a light-source, while the opening faced away from the light source.
  • The flies, employing their mindless random flight patterns, all escaped the jar within two minutes.

  • The bees, on the other hand, insisted on going in the direction of the light at the bottom of the jar, and persisted there until they died.
