Modulation - Used to describe how a signal value is modified by a weight value in a synapse. It is a synonym for the word gate as it is used here, and roughly synonymous for the word gate as it is used to describe biological synapse functions. Expressed in floating point arithmetic, it is simply the signal value multiplied by the weight value. For this reason the word multiply is also sometimes used as a synonym for modulate.
