David Marr really got the ball rolling on complex models of brain function and learning. Between 1969 and 1971 he published three journal papers presenting theories on three important areas of the brain.

His papers on the cerebellar and cerebral cortex introduced a form of long term learned behavior that was refined and used by later experimenters and robotics designers (James Albus, et al.).
