**Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI)** is an

MRI imaging technique that maps the diffusion tensor (i.e. diffusion of water). Its primary use is to map and characterize the directional diffusion of water as a function of its location in three dimensional space. The diffusion tensor describes the magnitude, the degree of anisotropy, and the orientation, of directional differences in diffusion. Estimates of white matter connectivity patterns in the brain from white matter mapping may be obtained using the degree of diffusion, and the principal diffusion directions.
