Exocytosis

 
The process whereby a vesicle within a cell merges with the cell's membrane and releases its contents into the extra-cellular space.

Synaptic terminals of biological neurons contain vesicles with neurotransmitters. These are released into the synaptic cleft via exocitosys during an action potential.
